Like many people, Becoming Well founders Matt and Laura Burton came into their marriage with baggage. Both had been cheated on by their former spouses and had lost those marriages. Both came from homes where addiction and harshness had wounded their hearts. Both were trauma survivors; experiencing abuse and neglect in early childhood that left them searching for healing. Although both had done extensive work individually to heal the wounds of the past, there still seemed to be something missing in their marriage. It was hugely confusing, frustrating, and beyond painful.
Laura knew that Matt had been in recovery for pornography addiction since 1992 and had felt comfortable marrying him because of how hard he worked to remain sober. However, he remained critical and distant. And though she had done extensive counseling work on her own, she often found herself yelling, screaming, and begging to be heard and loved for who she was. It wasn’t until the couple discovered that Matt was an intimacy avoidant that the pieces finally started to come together. After finding the necessary tools to address this issue and combining them with things they’d both learned along the way, they began to rebuild trust and cultivate the marriage that they’d always wanted.
The programs at Becoming Well are a culmination of decades of work combined with specialized training and accreditation. Our founders, Matt and Laura, have put together the tools necessary to address even the toughest of relationship issues. They can’t wait to share them with you.
