Finding Support as a Male Survivor

Sexual abuse is a horrific trauma to undergo. It might result in feelings of guilt, self-doubt, and low self-esteem. You were violated, possibly by someone you trusted, and that’s incredibly painful. If you’ve experienced sexual abuse, you’re not alone.

If you feel ready to start on the healing path, there are many resources for men who have experienced sexual abuse. There are ways for you to find the support that you need and that will help you thrive.

Just because you are a man doesn’t mean you have to be stoic and dismissive toward your trauma. The more men who seek help and healing, the more will feel encouraged to come forward as well. The belief that men aren’t hurt by sexual trauma is a misconception that is absolutely not true.

Here are some ways you can find support:

  • Seek out a therapist, possibly one who specializes in sexual trauma
  • Malesurvivor.org is a helpful resource/community for men who have been sexually abused
  • 1in6.org has a 24/7 anonymous help chat, as well as virtual meetings.
  • Becoming Well provides support and coaching for individuals and couples suffering from intimacy and infidelity trauma.

You can also visit my site, Little Red Telescope for more information.

What are some misconceptions you’ve heard, or even had, about the sexual abuse of men?
